Example: 5 less than three times a number is 40. What is the number: Let number be n. 3n – 5 = 40 3n = 45 (Adding 5 to both sides of the equation) n = 15 (Dividing both sides of the equation by 3) 8th graders started a new unit today on solving one-step and two step equations.
